The WAMAwards will see 38 winners revealed Thursday 2 November at the WAMAwards being held at the new Gate One Theatre at Claremont Showgrounds. Unfortunately Tired Lion have had to pull out of the event, but we’re excited confirm some huge additions, lead by ARIA, WAMi and triple j local heroes San Cisco, multi-WAMAwards 2017 nominees RAG N’ BONE, 8-piece party-starters The Bambuseae Rhythm Section and WAMAwards-dominating Perthonality Timothy Nelson (DJ Set). The latest addition to the WAMAwards line-up is The Southern River Band, Perth's very own rock n' roll dance party.
These acts are in addition to previously announced artists including Stella Donnelly, John Bennett & David Hyams, Harry Mitchell & Daniel Susnjar, and Nerve Quakes. We’re also pleased to announce the ceremony will be hosted by returning media icon Russell Woolf and equal parts TV celeb/local music lover Dominique Pratt, plus guest presenters.
HALL OF FAME
We’re also honoured to announce who will be inducted on the night into the Hall Of Fame; a huge congratulations to the legendary Eurogliders and the late, great Graham Wood.
Graham Wood was born in 1971, in Perth, and developed a love for music early in life. He studied and lectured at WAAPA and made a significant contribution to curriculum design and development in jazz and contemporary music. He also completed a PhD in music education, and his studies discussing medical problems related to jazz pianists were published internationally. He was nominated for the 2013 Western Australian of the Year award, in the Arts category, and previously for the Golden WAMi award. In 2009 he co-founded The Ellington Jazz Club, a venue which has proven invaluable to the Perth jazz scene. He also created and directed the Perth International Jazz Festival. He released four albums with the Graham Wood Trio, and recorded in countless other ensembles. In 2013 he was diagnosed with a rare and aggressive cancer, and unfortunately due to liver damage caused by surgery, passed away on the 19 July this year. He will be sorely missed, but his contribution to Perth and the wider music community will always be remembered, hugely appreciated and continue to inspire.
The Eurogliders began in 1981 in Perth as a love story between a songwriter and a singer. With Grace Knight, the 'manic ballerina', and Bernie Lynch on vocals and guitar, their performances were a cry of anthems that audiences sung along with til their lungs were bursting. Within a decade, Eurogliders had recorded four albums, enjoyed a multitude of chart-topping singles and received a swag of awards from around the globe, for both their music and videos. Songs like Heaven (1984), We Will Together (1985), and Absolutely (1986) became the songs of a young Australian generation. The band won numerous Countdown and MTV awards, charted Top 5 Billboard in the US, and performed ‘live’ on MTV’s New Year’s Eve party in New York, broadcast to over 65 million people. Grace Knight since forged an award-winning solo career, as well as acting in the award-winning TV mini-series Come In Spinner. She’s one of only a handful of people to be nominated for ARIA awards in three separate decades. Bernie Lynch continued writing music for theatre and forged, with Collette Dinnigan, a fashion empire. A reformation has led to new Eurogliders material between the two, including last year’s album Don’t Eat The Daisies.
