WAMAwards Nominees & Evening Revealed + Public Voting Now Open and Kiss My Camera Finalists Uncovered!

WAMAwards 600 x 365.png

As part of WAMFest presented by Act-Belong-Commit, we’re pleased to reveal the 2018 WAMAwards nominees!

Leading the noms this year is Albany-born singer-songwriter Carla Geneve, with her hard-hitting live show and relatable lyricism earning her a whopping seven award nominations – including Best Folk Act, Best Rock Act, Best Single and Best Guitarist. Hyclass, Jack Davies, Jacob Diamond, Jamilla, Kate Pass, and Stella Donnelly all follow with four award nominations apiece. With Alana Macpherson, Feels, Psychedelic Porn Crumpets, and Spacey Jane coming in with three each. Please join us in congratulating all the talented 2018 WAMAwards nominees (many of which are set to play as part of WAMFest Live), with the full list revealed below.

Also revealed are this year’s sensational Kiss My Camera finalists, whose award-nominated photographs encapsulate some of the best music moments from the past year. This year’s winning shots will be screened as part of the WAMAwards, as well as across outdoor screens like the Northbridge Piazza, Perth Cultural Centre and Yagan Square Digital Tower in the leadup to WAMFest.

While over 300 industry judges decide who will take out top prize across the 30 award categories, we’re also calling on WA music fans to have their say; with WAMAwards public voting now open. This year you can vote for all your local favourites across five public award categories, including Most Popular Live Act, Most Popular New Act, and Most Popular Venue. Don’t dilly-dally, though, head to wamfest.com.au to cast your vote before 5pm Thursday 11 October.

Winners will be revealed Thursday 1 November at the annual WAMAwards, which this year debuts at the swanky Grand Ballroom of the Hyatt Regency Hotel Perth. With the WAMi’s prestigious new home boasting luxe-vibes and first-class facilities, this year’s high-quality affair will be a true reflection of the immense talent recognised throughout the awards. Guests are encouraged to leave the ripped jeans at home and dial up the style for a lively evening celebrating WA music’s very best.

“What a fantastic and diverse list of WA talent. We are blessed here in WA with such a high-quality music community and each year the job of shortlisting from within that community is really hard. Over the years we’ve constantly strived to elevate the state’s annual music awards to reflect this talent. We’re pleased to see this year’s WAMi’s hosted at the Hyatt Regency Hotel Perth and look forward to celebrating in style with all this year’s deserving nominees.”

ABOUT WAMFEST

Now in its 25th year, WAMFest presented by Act-Belong-Commit and proudly supported by the City of Perth is the country’s biggest celebration of emerging West Australian artists, bands and producers. Spanning multiple weekends, the WAMFest Live component will see hundreds of WA artists takeover venues and outdoor stages for a series of FREE live music events in Perth City on Friday 2 November and Northbridge on Saturday 3 November, with more events kicking off in regional WA and Perth suburbs in the weeks before and after still to be announced.

Kiss My Camera Opens with New Category for Live Shots of Touring Acts

Free to enter and open to photographers of all levels, WAM’s annual Kiss My Camera competition returns to celebrate the valuable work of music photographers across WA and shine a light on the incredible music moments captured over the last year.

Categories recognising Best Portrait/Press Shot of a WA Act and Best Live Photograph of a WA Act are back again. Plus, to provide opportunities for local photographers shooting larger scale music events, a new category has been added this year recognising Best Live Photograph of a Touring Act (any national/international act, as long as it’s shot in WA).

Shortlisted shots will again be on show for tens of thousands to enjoy, with the exhibition running on both the Perth Cultural Centre Screen and the Northbridge Piazza Screen, thanks to the Perth Cultural Centre and the City of Perth.

Aside from scoring heaps of valuable exposure, category winners will also take home a generous prize pack, thanks to our fantastic Kiss My Camera sponsors, including:

  • A feature in scenestr magazine
  • 1hr consultation with Sorrento Strategic Music for tax advice particularly relevant to photographers
  • 8 hrs studio time at Huzzard Studios
  • Sensor cleaning at Hartlands Camera Repairs
  • 1 standard membership with PICA Art Addicts (1 year)
  • 1 membership with Perth Centre for Photography (3 years)
  • $100 to spend at Leederville Camera House
  • 1 individual membership with WAM (1 year)
  • 1 double pass for WAMCon 2018
  • 1 media pass for all WAMFest 2018 events
  • Plus, more to be announced!

Entries will be judged by an industry panel consisting of long-standing Perth music photographers Duncan Barnes and Chris O'Halloran, and renowned music journalist Bob Gordon.

Kiss My Camera closes 5pm Wednesday 12 September 2018.
