Replete with soaring choruses and intricate chord progressions, Tom King’s music is a fizzing, melodic cocktail of 70s rock and modern folk pop echoing Nilsson, Neil Finn and Elliot Smith. He is best known for his work with Apollo Million and is now striking out on his own, recording his debut EP and treating audiences to his tune-smithery and banter at solo spots around Perth
The Midnight Mules are an Australian indie-rock outfit from Perth Western Australia.
'The Mules' as they are affectionately named by their fans, began to form when Tom Mantle (vocals, guitar) met Chris Rowe (guitar vocals) and Matt Revil (drums) in Primary School back in 1995.
Tom, Matt & Chris; 'The Primary Mules' as they have so-called themselves, played together and with other bands until finally forming 'The Midnight Mule's as a serious project in 2011. This time period saw long standing member James Vincuillo joining 'The Mules' on bass..
In 2012 'The Mules' released a double A single which featured 'PoP CoC & 'Waves'. Recorded by Chris Rowe and 'The Mule's utilising their signature DIY style.. These two songs showcase the bands heavy brit pop influences and it was around this time Xpress Magazine dubbed them as sounding like “... an illigitmate love child of Weezer & The Hives”. Something that defintely rings true today.
The band found themselves with some short international tours playing in Indonesia and Thailand and it was in Thailand in 2012 that 'The Mules' had their signature red and black suits crafted.
Another year of gigging, honing their insane onstage energy, jump to September 2013 and The Midnight Mules release their first EP: 'First World Problems' recorded by Corey Marriot at YoYo's Studio and mastered by Andrew Edgson at 301 Sydney.
'First World Problems' shows the bands sound change having to a harder edge and a clear comparisons can be drawn between Two Door Cinema Club & Last Dinosaurs.
'The Mules' continuted to gig around Perth and cemented a name for themselves as one of Perths mains-stay acts. Always bringing powerful on stage energy to all of their shows and playing in every venue in Perth with bands such as Rag N' Bone, Lacey, Tired Lion & You Got A Radio (JAP).
2014 See's long standing bass player James Vicuillo depart the band to be replaced by current member and ex Paradise Motor Inn front man Joel Sargent joining the band on bass.
2016 see's the band launch their most current EP 'Still Here'. An obvious nod to the fact that no matter what, against all odds, 'The Midnight Mules' are 'Still Here', still gigging and still bringing you their fast based brand of indie rock their fans have come to know and love.
Falling back to their roots and recording DIY style with Chris Rowe at 'The Mules' stable and home away from home Denise Dancing School 'Still Here' is The Midnight Mules in their purest, but not yet final form.
The four-piece of Fremantle’s Hideous Sun Demon have already built their reputation as a formidable live band. Consisting of guitarists, Vincent Buchanan-Simpson and Lee Napper, bassist Jake Suriano and drummer Blake Hart, their intention has always been to animate their medium.
Following on from “Cul-De-Sac Vision” released earlier this year, their latest offering from forthcoming album, Industry Connections, which has no official release date or details, but bound to be a beast, comes in the form of “Oscillate” – a tense, potent dose of rocking jangle, bathing in dark undertones
It’s something they know they have not yet mastered, but how many artists out there have? While their ability to get the kids dancing, get the floor at shows and house parties to cave in has certainly convinced audiences aplenty of their prowess, and also seen them share stages with Thee Oh Sees, King Gizzard, Dune Rats, and open Laneway Festival in their hometown, Hideous Sun Demon are ever honing their blade.
Hideous Sun Demon find themselves at their most frenetic on record in “Oscillate,” unleashing a cacophony of sprawling throwdowns, all the while showcasing the band’s dynamic song-writing ability and Vincent’s adrenaline fuelled vocal, with a penchant for weird, in a world of psychedelia and all kinds of fuzzy, eccentric noise play.
Apollo Zen play a brand of alternative-hardcore punk. Think of somewhere between Go It Alone and Self Defense Family, or the feeling of Nirvana being mistakenly played at the funeral of a distant, elderly relative that you never met. A sound that attempts to capture the moment of losing your hat in a storm and realizing that it’s your own fault for wearing a hat out into a storm
We are Last Quokka, a DIY Australiana proto-punk band from the west coast of Australia. Described as "a more aggressive Eddy Current Suppression Ring" by Perth's own Peter Bibby we are influenced by the great tradition of Australiana punk.
We formed in March of 2016 and have been busy little quokkas since then, launching a self titled EP in October that was widely acclaimed across our local music scene. RTRFM Music Director, Will Backler, listed it in his top 10 worldwide releases for the year.
We have gigged relentlessly since then, including playing quintessential Perth festival Camp Doogs, as well as touring in Melbourne and Tasmania. On top of this, we have supported east coast acts such as The Peep Temple, Terrible Truths and Amyl and the Sniffers and have also consistently supported for local stalwarts such as Boat Show, Peter Bibby, FOAM and Rag n’ Bone.
OLD BLOOD is one of the most exciting bands to emerge on the Perth Music Scene. The sensationally fluid guitar work of Edo Ekic coupled with the raw, in your face vocals of Tony Papa-Adams and backed by one of the strongest rhythm sections in town (Shaun Liddell-Jennings Bass and Tyler Ray Michie drums) produces a unique sound that can perhaps be best described as “Grunge Blues”
The band has been a favourite of the Perth blues scene and has already played in some of Perth’s biggest blues festivals including West Coast Blues and Roots Festival 2015, Blues at Bridgetown (3years in a row), The Winter Blues Fest, Big Splash finale, Angove St Festival and the Beaufort St Festival. Since their first appearance back in June 2011 at Mojos, this band has built a cult following with sold out shows all across town including the Bird, Rosemount, Mojos’s and the Bakery. Off the back of their recent WAM Win in 2016 for best blues and roots act, these local lads have been beating a path into the hearts and minds of music lovers and are proving to be a force not to be taken light
Since forming in late 2015 and a spending the last couple of years gigging around Perth and the WA's southwest, infectious psych-blues trio Marmalade Mama have finally ready to unleash their self titled debut EP.
Recorded, mixed and produced at RADA Studios with the legendary Dan Carroll the result is a sound that has evolved to be much more than a mash of blusey rock and psychedelia, with the transition from grunge to good vibes pelleting through in their live performance.
Inspired by the monster B-movies and garage sounds of the 60s, CATZILLA burst onto
the Perth scene 18 months ago, with a self-released vinyl EP "Going Wild”. Since then
they’ve performed at one of the legendary Back From The Grave garage events in Tokyo
and played with Japan’s no.1 60s beat combo the Neatbeats.
Fast-forward to 2017 and the band have cut 14 “Zilla killers” for their debut album, out
on Off The Hip records on 3rd November. The opening blast ‘Boy From Another Time’ is
an infectious slice of garage rock n roll, featuring CATZILLA’s signature fuzz guitar, keys
and girl vocals - it’s perfect for your next go-go party!
J.F.K is a 5-piece power punch of Garage Rock fronted by Perth singer-songwriter James Knox. Drawing influence from The Hives, Queens Of The Stone Age and Temples the band delivers a unique sound that combines floating guitar riffs and infectious Brit-Pop melodies with one of the most manic and animated live shows in the Perth scene. Since forming at the beginning of last year the boys in suits have quickly been making a name for themselves - taking out two major Perth band comps in 2017 and opening for The Belligerents on the Perth leg of their national tour late last year.
Their own unique sound? Check. A solid following? Check. The hottest up-and-coming alt rock act in the country? Check.
In music, some things just work. And Foxton Kings nailed it with their debut EP Crooked Tales. Tracks like Black Whip Lovin and Hell Cat got glowing reviews around Australia.
The band formed only in 2015, but are already back in the studio and you can expect big things from the boys this year.
Things are a little different this time around. Frontman Joel Stevens is still a serious presence on stage, but the band's brave bluesy / prog sound has developed.
Foxton Kings have already worked with some of Australias most experienced industry fixtures like Rob Grant (Poons Head Studios, Fremantle) and Callan Orr (Avalanche Studios, Melbourne).
Their music is inspired by characters on the fringes of our society the vagabonds, the misfits, the outcasts.
But while the stories behind their songs is all about the outer, Foxton Kings are very much at the centre of their sound.
Let go of the heartbreak and let freedom take over with Kopano. We are a five piece band that play pop and indie electronic songs about love and renewal. Kopano was originally a solo project started by the front woman Jemma Bradford in late 2015/early 2016 and has gained attention in Perth's local music scene and through online media platforms. In June 2017 KOPANO debuted our first appearance as a band along with The Malfunctions Ep to a sold out audience at the Bird gaining even more momentum in the scene and on local radio stations such as RTR.FM. Kopano strives to take a female persona artist to the next level with a strong band and intimate but upbeat live experience creating an unforgettable performance.
Fusing youthful energy, punk rock spirit and soaring vocals The Faim have inspired a loyal fanbase of fans across Australia. Started by 4 high school friends in 2014 the band has steadily gigged across Perth developing their sound, eventually leading to the band being invited to LA to record with Grammy nominated producer John Feldmann (Blink 182, The Used 5SOS). With an international record deal and booking agent in place, 2018 is gearing up to be a massive band.
Ben and Kirsty have been playing music together for almost 10 years now. Back in 2008 they started the band "The Kirbens" which they eventually changed the name to "The Gypsie Howls". After success at Nannup Festival, Fairbridge Festival, WAMi Festival, a whole bunch of gigs an EP launch and a single launch they called it quits and all moved on.
In mid 2017 Ben and Kirsty decided to revisit their love of music and relaunch as brand new band. So they teamed up with a new drummer and bass player and set to work. It didn’t take long for the sound to develop and Hector Protector was born. In September they jumped into the studio to record a brand new song “I’m Not Here”. Hector Protector’s new sound is a blend of rock and pop with synths and powerful harmonies.
Emerging from Australia’s most isolated Capitol City in late 2016, Perth 5 piece Vacant Home have quickly established themselves as one of Australia’s best up and coming Melodic Hardcore acts. The bands DIY ethic and humble attitude from their beginnings playing house shows in their home town has seen them support the likes of Stick To Your Guns, Deez Nuts, House Vs Hurricane, Knocked Loose, Saviour & label mates Ambleside in their city’s best venues as well as a nationwide tour with Eat Your Heart Out. Stage Dives & Mic Grab city!
A 4 piece, pop-punk, emo-shoegazey dream. JOYS has been playing for about a year now, playing last years WAMfest at the hen house after releasing their debut self-titled EP. We've played with some great local bands and recently played on the Hot Freaks line up for this year.
Following the success of their debut single ‘Our Place’, which included heavy triple j rotation and blog love from all over the world, VERGE COLLECTION have had a massive start to their career. Verge Collection's new single 'For The Story' is out now, and is taken from their forthcoming debut full length LP.
Alt-folk oddity Jacob Diamond sings bold songs about love and death. After years in Perth’s songwriting underground, Diamond has recently emerged as one of the foremost singer-songwriters in the west, furnished with huge melodies and incisive lyrics. His intricate, genre-bent bangers take all the best bits from boxes of 60’s compilation CDs, memories of a crowded Catholic childhood, Les Miserables and one reckless detour into jazz-study. Well short of being as confused as it sounds, his work has earned him first prize in The Big Splash band competition, WAM awards for best folk act (2015) and best male vocalist (2016), the acclaimed release of EPs Chum (2015) and Um (2017) and national tours and supports. Jacob is gearing up for the release of his debut album, made with Producer Lachlan Carrick (Gotye, CW Stoneking) for release late in 2017.
‘…A phenomenal voice, with excellent control and impressive range… the performance definitely promised the young talent to be an artist worth paying attention to.’- Larry Heath, AU REVIEW
The Big Splash Band Competition, 2015
Best Folk Act, 2015 WAM Awards
Best male Vocalist, 2016 WAM Awards
Grace Barbe hails from the sunburnt Indian Ocean islands of the Seychelles, where a colourful history of slavery, pirates, coups d'etat and coconuts have produced a unique Kreol rhythm, language and culture.
Drawing from the diverse cultural melange of the islands, Grace's trio fuses the tropical rhythms and dances of the slaves with psychedelic rock, afrobeat, reggae and pop.
Conjuring a bewilderingly huge sound, the musical ESP between bassist Grace and younger sister Joelle Barbe (drums) must be seen to be believed. Guitarist Jamie Searle adds a dense layer of Afro - guitar sorcery.
Grace has been enticing audiences to get up and shake their coconuts since the release of her debut album Kreol Daughter in 2009, with appearances all over India, East Africa (Sauti za Busara Festival, Zanzibar) and the Indian Ocean (Sakifo Festival, La Reunion) as well as at Australia's leading music festivals, including Womadelaide, WOMAD New Zealand, Byron Bay Bluesfest and Woodford Folk Festival. Her band has won the award for "Best World Act" seven times in her current home state of Western Australia.
Passionately committed to showcasing and developing the Kreol culture with which she is so deeply connected, Grace is touring her album Welele!

For Hercules Morse, with all members new to band-life, it took a little while jamming together to work out that the simplest writing sessions usually birthed the best sounding music. After forming just over two years ago and messing around with changes their style for several months, HM settled on a fast, angry, hooky sound - in the vein of much loved hardcore outfits like Backtrack, Guns Up! and TUI. As soon as the five-piece stopped overcomplicating things and started simply writing the music they wanted to hear, things clicked in a big way and the band’s true sound revealed itself. It only took a handful of gigs for Hercules Morse’s live show to evolve into one of the most intense and energetic in Perth, including two shows at The Hen House Live which exceeded capacity, with the band priding themselves on taking their intensity to new levels each time they play live. Over the past year, HM have spent a stack of time in the rehearsal studio, nailing their sound and tightening up their set and are taking it into the studio to record their debut EP.
You're so cute I wanna wear you like a suit, I think you'd look pretty good on me...
...and in sinks the hook from the cheeky, playful and downright sexy new single from Perth's finest purveyors of infectious soul pop - Boom! Bap! Pow! Leading lady and human firecracker Novac Bull has always threatened to let the devil on her shoulder get the better of her, but on this latest slice of dark sunshine, Bull has really gone off the deep end. As evidenced in Suit's almost Tarantino-esque video (produced by award winning film maker Ben Young) – the track sees everyone's favourite livewire's in a relentlessly playful mood. As musical gunslingers, Boom! Bap! Pow! have always been ahead of the curve, a reputation forged on their epic one and a half hour plus live sets, but on Suit they display something significantly more nuanced. Produced by Matt Giovennangelo (Voltaire Twins, Split Seconds) at the renowned Studio Couch and mixed by man-of-the-moment Steve Schram (San Cisco, The Cat Empire), Suit, with it's deeper than deep kick n' bass, spindly yet restrained guitar noodlings and Bull's peerless vocal stylings, could only be the work of a band completely at ease with themselves and their mission statement. Boom! Bap! Pow! are no longer residing completely in the past, yet they're always giving a wink and a nod to their forefathers & foresisters, just for good measure and humility. This all comes together to form a blink and you'll miss it nugget of pop that will refuse leave your head until the moment you accidentally hear Gangham Style again. Even then, it'll share the couch.
One of Australia's hardest working pop bands, Boom! Bap! Pow!'s previous releases have seen them tour long, hard and constantly, taking in the majority of our wide brown land (including the Wheatbelt!) and picking up national tours with the likes of Eli 'Paperboy' Reed and The Royal Crown Revue. They've also performed feverishly received spots at the festivals like Laneway, the Big Day Out and the Queenscliffe Music Festival, among many, many more. To launch Suit they are once again hitting the long, scorched freeways of Western Australia and playing a clutch of shows that will only help to affirm their reputation as one of the best live bands currently hitting the boards.
The Faux are a 4-piece alternative rock band formed in Perth, Western Australia. The group consists of Alex Agnew (vocals, rhythm guitar), Samuel Tye (lead guitar), Jonathan Dimascio (bass guitar) & Brad Forbes (drums).
Inspired by the likes of The Wombats, The 1975 and INXS; The Faux combine the different sounds they each grew up on & those of their favourite bands now to create songs that anyone can listen to & enjoy. Their live show is highly energetic, showcasing the passion & the vulnerability that goes into the vast array of songs in their set.
The group's first single “9:14” was released on May 31st 2016 & launched them into the Perth scene, where they are now a regular fixture. Their reputation for their live show has landed them several support shows, including 'As It Is' on their Australian tour.
The combination of playing shows and the release of 9:14 then gave them a platform to release their highly anticipated EP “Are You Awake?” which was released on June 20, 2017. This effort debuted at number 6 on the Alternative iTunes charts and number 21 on the overall charts. They followed it up by selling out their first ever headline show at The Garage, which was another overwhelming success.
The Faux are currently writing their second EP, with a 2018 national tour in the works.
Starting out as a two-piece poetry performance outfit, Treehouses rose from underground bedroom project to an internationally recognised staple of the emo/spoken word scene. Now with a full-length album, cassette single, collaborative EP and two national tours to their name, Treehouses have realised a full contemporary sound, coming into their own as a truly unique Australian band. Treehouses released a new single 'COPING' on the 12th of September - an emotionally intense song that showcases their powerful sound.
Your Girl Pho, the sassy & fun stage persona of Phoebe Gunson that Perth has come to know brings sweet jazz pop vibes that numerous producers are lining up to collaborate with. Her recent collabs with Palais, Ukiyo & Tayrell aswell as featuring on Majestic Casual Youtube channel are great examples or her amazing ability to write infectious catchy hits. Pho has returned from her tour in Mexico City with a new element to her live set. Pho is known for her big vocal range and her looping during shows, and her angsty lyrics of love and heartbreak.
