Forming in 2012, Spilt Cities debuted with their lead single, ‘Release (Narrow Escape)’, a charged, high energy track culminating in a doomy, post-rock outro. This established Spilt Cities within the Perth scene and gained the band some national radio play, getting a spin on Triple J’s Short-Fast-Loud. With the first release out, Spilt Cities put focus on their live show, and cut their teeth in various venues across the Perth scene.
Following up from their debut single, the band released the 2012 EP build/rebuild, a moody and atmospheric recording that delved further into post-hardcore, shoegaze and post-rock. This further solidified the band within the Perth scene, and allowed more opportunity for shows across more venues. Using this opportunity, the band developed their live show, introducing interludes between songs and playing around with new sounds and approaches. This learning experience fed into their next single, 2014’s ‘Bondurant’, which saw the band take their first interstate tour, playing with Horror My Friend in Adelaide, and Ceres in Melbourne.
With another release under their belt, the band gained further attention, which saw them scoring their first international supports. Within a two year period, Spilt Cities opened up for The Matches, supported mewithoutYou, played main support for Tigers Jaw at both the 18+ and AA shows as well as playing main support for Balance and Composure. Over this time, Spilt Cities were also tucked away recording their debut album- life, on hold, which is scheduled for release on October 4th, with an interstate tour to follow.
