Toyotomi

Toyotomi

Toyotomi1.jpg

Toyotomi Hideyoshi was regarded as a “great unifier” of Japan. He began as a peasant but eventually rose to become a powerful leader and warrior. Toyotomi is also a 17-year-old hip-hop artist from Perth. He makes music with his friends and writes raps in his bedroom. Sometimes they spend too much on cool clothes and sometimes they eat a lot of unhealthy food. He’s been rapping since he was real young; 12-years-old. His style, flow, content and delivery has matured greatly since and he is now renowned amongst the new-wave hip-hop crowd within Perth. He’s been making cool-ass music videos and he’s been doing cool-ass shows at The Bird, YMCA HQ, The Rosemount (supporting Stones Throw), The Good Shepherd, Jack Rabbit Slim’s (supporting Baro) and Falls Festival. I won’t mince words with you guys; the kid is a rising star and he’ll be headlining festivals and tours before he can legally buy a drink. There is no-one like this in Perth right now; an effortless combination of youth, style and charisma.

Tobacco Rat

Tobacco Rat.jpg

Tobacco Rat is the solo project of accomplished WA producer and composer Jake Steele, who is delving deeper into darker, subterranean music styles. In the rat sack is a varied mix of electronic, bass, futurebeat, industrial, dancehall, techno and hip hop styles; which Tobacco Rat expertly meshes together, resulting in wild, heavy beats with warped, bass-led grooves. Tobacco Rat is a project ideally experienced live, where smoke machines and custom reactive visuals, MIDI controllers and a giant albino rat create an electrifying atmosphere. Recently Tobacco Rat has released his debut EP and additional single, had multiple tracks receive high rotation on Triple J Unearthed, won Best Electronic Track (Trenchtown 2020/Infra) two years in a row at the WAM Awards, win the Triple J Unearthed competition to open up the Listen Out Festival in Perth, played Groovin The Moo and also supported Empire Of The Sun in Los Angeles. With a forthcoming new EP due out on Trench Records, official remixes, another national tour, festival appearances, national supports, new music videos and 3d printed merchandise in production the future looks exciting for Tobacco Rat.

The Money War

The Money War

The Money War.jpg

The Money War was conceived while Dylan Ollivierre (Rainy Day Women) and Carmen Pepper (Warning Birds) drove across the US in late 2015. Inspired by the trip, a pile of iPhone demos was created. After a chance meeting with producers Thom Monahan (Fruit Bats, Little Joy) and Arne Frager (Prince, Paul McCartney) in a dive bar in San Francisco, the duo were convinced of the value of the demos. Returning home with a load of stories, they then began work on materializing a record.

The release of their songs was immedietely met with positivity with Triple J unearthing the band after presenters caught their set at the WA Music Festival. The band were then added to the Southbound Festival lineup for 2016 and ‘Recall’ was added to rotation on Triple J Radio. The Money War recently signed with Select Music and were nominated for ‘Most Popular New Act’ at the 2016 WA Music Awards.

Spilt Cities

Spilt Cities

SC-press-14.jpg

Forming in 2012, Spilt Cities debuted with their lead single, ‘Release (Narrow Escape)’, a charged, high energy track culminating in a doomy, post-rock outro. This established Spilt Cities within the Perth scene and gained the band some national radio play, getting a spin on Triple J’s Short-Fast-Loud. With the first release out, Spilt Cities put focus on their live show, and cut their teeth in various venues across the Perth scene.

Following up from their debut single, the band released the 2012 EP build/rebuild, a moody and atmospheric recording that delved further into post-hardcore, shoegaze and post-rock. This further solidified the band within the Perth scene, and allowed more opportunity for shows across more venues. Using this opportunity, the band developed their live show, introducing interludes between songs and playing around with new sounds and approaches. This learning experience fed into their next single, 2014’s ‘Bondurant’, which saw the band take their first interstate tour, playing with Horror My Friend in Adelaide, and Ceres in Melbourne.

With another release under their belt, the band gained further attention, which saw them scoring their first international supports. Within a two year period, Spilt Cities opened up for The Matches, supported mewithoutYou, played main support for Tigers Jaw at both the 18+ and AA shows as well as playing main support for Balance and Composure. Over this time, Spilt Cities were also tucked away recording their debut album- life, on hold, which is scheduled for release on October 4th, with an interstate tour to follow.

If Bukowski had a punk band, it’d sound like PAT CHOW. They’re kind of like your favourite dive bar; rough around the edges, endearingly familiar and oozing with character. They released their debut EP 'Good Deed' in 2014 and followed it up with the stunning debut LP 'Are You Okay?' in October 2015 to critical acclaim around the country, including The West Australian naming it the second best WA album of 2015, just behind the world conquering Tame Impala. The album spawned three singles, including WAM ‘Rock Song Of The Year’ nominated 'Bad Thoughts', 'Pleasure Unit' and 'Outta Words', all of which have received national airplay on triple j, FBi (Syd), RRR (Melb), 4ZZZ (Bris) and RTR FM. The Southern River Band

southern river band.jpg

In a world where starting off a biography with "In a world where" is the norm, The Southern River Band are apparently no different. In the very same world, where labelling ones self is encouraged, where being able to describe ones style is expected, The Southern River Band neither know, nor care how to fit themselves into these pigeonholes. Head south on Perth's so-called "Freeway", jump on Roe Highway, Hang a right on Nicholson Road, go through the busiest roundabout in Australia, and you'll find yourself in Thornlie, the home of The Southern River Band. A country town in the heart of the suburbs, where the jukeboxes stock very little other than the very same songs you would've heard reverberating out of them in 1970's. They say you're a product of your surroundings, who are "they"? Nobody knows. But, they're not far wrong. You're bound to find one of the boys recycling their spare change, putting on 'Come Back Again' for the 3rd time in the space of 4 hours on any given Friday arvo.
