New Talk

New Talk.jpg

Perth-based 'polished scungers' Rag n' Bone have adopted a new moniker to carry them into their next phase. The move has been brought on by the rise of UK star Rag and Bone Man, resulting in a murder of misdirected Facebook messages, baffling playlist additions and undue congratulations from elderly relatives after viewing The Graham Norton Show. To this, the band says “NO MORE”!

Some great memories came from the time with the former name. The last couple of years saw the band release their debut album A Handful Of Ash, play festivals such as Falls, SOTA, Baybeats (Singapore) and Concrete & Glass (China), and shows with Stiff Little Fingers, Future Of The Left, WAAX, Jen Cloher and Gold Class, to name a few.

To usher in the next phase, NEW TALK has releases a new single ‘Red Tuesday’. Inspired by a devastating bushfire that ravaged through South Gippsland in Victoria at the turn of the 20th century. Recorded by frequent collaborator Dave Parkin, Red Tuesday is a powerful statement on the importance of place and family remembrance, oscillating between vast space and massive distortion and anchored by Kiera Owen's ever-powerful lead vocal.

Accompanying the track is an incredible one shot video directed by Luna Laure of Via Luna Pictures and produced by Pavlova. Luna's vision compliments the song perfectly, using a fiery lighting display tracked through a flooded basement to capture the song's dramatic themes and intensity.'

The Money War

The Money War

The Money War.jpg

The Money War was conceived while Dylan Ollivierre (Rainy Day Women) and Carmen Pepper (Warning Birds) drove across the US in late 2015. Inspired by the trip, a pile of iPhone demos were created. After a chance meeting with producers Thom Monahan (Fruit Bats, Little Joy) and Arne Frager (Prince, Paul McCartney) in a dive bar in San Francisco, the duo were convinced of the value of the demos and began work on materializing a record.  Dylan started writing songs when he was 13 and soon began to figure out the recording process. “I got a 4 track cassette tape machine for my 16th Birthday and have been working on production since then”.

Dylan’s family is from Bequia, in the Caribbean, where his father worked as a shipwright on Bob Dylan’s boat ‘Water Pearl’. “I got to meet Bob Dylan a few times as he was a friend of my parents. I played guitar with him and talked a little about song writing. I wish I could have the conversation now because I would appreciate it so much more."

After being unearthed by Triple J, ‘Recall’ from the band’s debut EP became the 5th most played song of the year on Triple J Radio for 2017, helping the band grow their fan base in Australia and subsequently opening doors in the US. The band received praise from their peers including Neil Finn who expressed his admiration of the band’s songwriting after he watched them side of stage supporting him prior to heading to Austin, Texas to showcase at South by Southwest.

The Money War have been receiving airplay on numerous radio stations across the US including SiriusXM, KEXP, CJAM FM, KXRN California and WLKK New York. They’ve also been riding high on college radio charts and this exposure was clearly evident at SXSW where fans turned out to shows with the recognition of the songs on their lips. Several blogs including ‘Space City Rock’ and ‘We Are The Guard’ highlighted The Money War as one of the best acts at SXSW.

The Money War’s latest single ‘Hollywood’ marks a significant progression in the band’s sound, production values and songwriting. The cinematic, dream-pop mood conveys a sense of despair with Carmen Pepper’s ethereal vocal underscored by a wondrously swelling, atmospheric soundtrack. ‘Hollywood’ is due for release August 24 and is the first single taken from the band’s forthcoming, debut album.

Statues

STATUES_album promo - Statuesau.jpg

Statues are a progressive hardcore band from Perth, Western Australia. Since their foundation in 2009, Statues have become renowned for their extremely high energy live shows, treating everything and everyone as a part of the performance. In 2015 Statues released their debut record, “Together We’re Alone” to fantastic critical reception, Sputnik Music described it to “be mind-blowing in both craziness and shear heaviness.” Following the release of the album Statues went through a line-up change with the departure of Jayme Van Keulen (Vocals) and Dan Harper (Drums). Statues approached an old friend and guest vocalist on Together We’re Alone; Alex Shom to step in on vocals and local young gun Matt Unkovich to play Drums. After releasing the line-up’s debut single “Dogswamp” the band knuckled down to write what would become their most ambitious work to date. “No Grave, No Burial” is a concept album set in the heart of a civil war, the character must find safety by leaving his home. To escape he must lose loved ones, battle his own demons, face who took all he knows and uncover a horrific truth at the end of his struggles. He fights to find freedom, only to uncover further persecution and a bleak reality.

The Floors

The Floors

The Floors.png

Born on a different kind of bayou, West Australian trio The Floors combine a very individual air of menace with a charm that is both unsettling and arresting at once.

They are, on occasion, described as a blues band, though the workhorse floor meets the kitchen floor at times, with the sink thrown in for good measure. This music isn’t about archetypes, it’s the people in your house and sometimes it’s you. The lessons were hard learnt when this trio first took to the road over a decade ago…

“We were pure, innocent teenagers,” vocalist/guitarist, Luke Dux recalls. “Then we were offered the opportunity to spend a few years touring around the country and we were corrupted. We learnt how to play like our lives depended on it. In some towns it did.”

This much you can tell when you witness The Floors in performance. Ryan Dux’s tectonic bass locks in with the maniacal march of Ashley Doodkorte’s pummelling drums, both permeated by the splitting squall of Luke Dux’s cyclonic guitar and curdling vocals, it’s clear The Floors mean every note and every word. They harness something wild and visceral – a mood that fans flames and conjures hellhounds without ever bludgeoning for its own sake.

“It could fall apart at any moment and we’re trying to tear the earth into two,” says Luke. “It’s a lot of fun, but we mean what we play.”

What else can one say about the three debonair young gentlemen that make the uncouth and unholy racket unleashed in the rolling juggernaut the rest of us unsuspecting citizens now recognise as The Floors? We could count the sheer amount of West Australian Music Awards (9 and counting); the coveted support slots for icons such as the Buzzcocks, Jon Spencer Blues Explosion, King Khan, and X; the affinity with the almighty Beast Records (home to the likes of Kim Salmon, The Kill Devil Hills, Cash Savage, and Six Ft Hick); the acclaimed albums; or the legions of fans from Bunbury in the South West of Australia, to Brittany in the North West of France.

But that speaks nothing to the face-melting intensity of a band whose music is nothing if not energetic, driven, base, savage, primal, grimy and above all REAL.

Moana

Moana

MOANA Promo Shot LANDSCAPE - Kat O'Neil.jpg

Spellbinding. Captivating. Bewitching. Seductive. Primal. Preternatural. Moana is the creative project of artist Moana Mayatrix, once described by JJJ’s Gemma Pike as one of Australia’s fiercest frontwomen, who is currently working in collaboration with musicians Lochy Hoffmann, Austin Rogers and Willow Fearns. Since the group’s inception in 2013, countless words have been written about the avant garde art rock outfit, all edging around the idea that there is something otherworldly, verging on genuinely dangerous, about this act. Combining the shamanic stream-of-consciousness poetry of peak-era Patti Smith with psychedelic melodies, grungy guitar licks, and propulsive rhythms, Moana doesn’t so much craft songs as pagan prayers set to the heartbeat of the world.

Moana transgresses the boundaries of form and genre, incorporating experimental art, theatre, spoken word performance, poetry, costuming, and more in a cross-media syncresis that engages all the senses physical and beyond, in a kind of ecstatic reverie. A singular approach to music and art has gathered to them a fiercely loyal tribe of fans, who have engaged with the project to successfully crowdfund not only their sophomore EP, The Trilogy of the Black Monsoon, but their upcoming debut album.

A regular and welcome fixture on the local live scene, Moana have played stellar local festival slots including RTRFM's In the Pines, State of the Art Festival, Beaufort Street Festival, Norfolk Lanes Youth Festival, Rottofest and have supported the likes of Tim Rogers, Abbe May, and Ocean Alley. Their recorded works have received rave reviews including a slot in "Top 20 Albums of 2014" from X-Press Magazine and their music video The Killer, My Girl was a finalist in "Best Music Video" for the 2014 WAM Awards, while Vader was a Best Music Video finalist at the 2016 WA Screen Awards.

Moana’s imminent debut LP sees their music push into uncharted territory, resulting in a sound that is weirder, heavier, prismatic. The 10 track album, under construction for the past 18 months, is meant as an exploration into the wild feminine and the brutal, beautiful natural world, the metamorphosis of insects and humans.

Following that, Moana’s next wildly ambitious project is The Colour Red, an artistic vision/psychological analysis/deconstruction of story that combines music, story-telling, visual art, motion-comic and performance-art to dissect and reconfigure the well-worn trope of the murder ballad into something new and challenging.

Led by Thomas Cockram, Turtle Bay Television have existed in various incarnations since 2012 but have settled on a consistent line up in the past few years, with the recent addition of sax player, Tom Beech, trumpet player, Will Johnson and vocalist, Amy Murray, to bolden their sound. After finding their feet in the local scene, Turtle Bay have gone on to share the stage with various local heroes, including Felicity Groom, Ziggy Ramo, Tired Lion, Demon Days and Ryan Beno. Turtle Bay’s sound is a culmination of various influences including post-punk, folk, noise pop and horror movies, leading to a sound somewhere between Sonic Youth and Broken Social Scene. Their sophomore EP, Scared of Everything, reflects upon the process of being diagnosed with a mental illness and the resulting combination of both confusion and morbid relief. The release tries to make sense of these conflicting states of mind and distills this self analysis into erudite, cathartic post-punk

Axe Girl

Axe Girl

Axe Girl.jpg

You know you’ve witnessed a rock and roll event when you fear for the safety of the performers on stage.  Axe Girl’s, front woman, Addison, performs as if her very existence depends on it.  From the moment she steps up to the mic and the band rumbles into powerful motion behind her, she’s transported, visiting us from another world.  A reality where the only thing that counts is the intensity and urgency of the performance itself.

When Axe Girl perform, expect to see jaws drop; audiences that weren’t sure what they were about to witness rush the stage to get closer; people compelled to movement.  Axe Girl are the authentic item and they mesmerise audiences like few bands can.

Hailing from Fremantle, Western Australia, where it’s long been known that some kind of magic periodically releases to the world a band of unique majesty, Axe Girl are in good company.  And they’re that good, nay great, that it’s not a stretch to say that they’re next in line to be taking their own version of the Fremantle sound to the world.  On top of their incandescent live show, Axe Girl have a swag of songs cast in their own original mould — yet almost instantly familiar — that will open any doors they want to step through.

Get along to one of Axe Girl’s local gigs while you still can, and witness for yourself the raw power that will make them the next big thing on the international stage.

Having won hearts across Australia touring with icons The Bennies and Clowns, and having supported the likes of Spiderbait, Hard Aches, Meat Puppets, Hard Ons, Abbe May and 28 Days, they now prepare to release their glittery new single ‘Yoko’ and hit the road in April with ANTY! (The Bennies) and HANNY J (Clowns).

Shangrilá

6-2 (2) - Gina Goodrich.jpg

After 9 months of writing from 2017 to the beginning of 2018 while rehearsing and fine tuning their new sound,”Shangrila” went into “Sumo Sound Studios” in Perth to record their up coming EP “LOVE AND LEAVING” and couldn’t be happier to share with you their first single - “Temptress”. After spending the last 7 years of their musical careers playing heavy music the band decided that the best way for them to challenge themselves and truly show people who they are with their music was to take a different turn and head down a more traditional Rock and Roll / Pop Punk path although still with some slight elements of their past genre. “Temptress” is a song about loving something or someone so dearly that you can never seem to walk away. Even when it starts to effect other aspects of you’re life in a negative way and you begin to question it, deep down you never stop loving it. This song relates directly to emotions the members of “Shangrila” have experienced together. “Shangrila’s” up coming EP “LOVE AND LEAVING” was produced and engineered by Tristan Sturmer at Sumo Sound Studios and mixed and mastered by Forrester Savell who has worked with Australian heavy weights such as “Karnivool and Dead Letter Circus”. The band is excited to grab hold of the future and are eager to get back on stage to share their music with the whole of Australia. They feel that they are finally creating and performing music that represents who they are as a band.

Perth pop duo PRISCILLA, brainchild of Luke and Priscilla brands an eclectic fusion of feel-good riffs, party drums and limitless vocals that land you mid conversation between Bjork and Kimbra at David Bowie’s house warming party.

The band have played support to acts like WOODES, EDEN, Matthew Young and a large list of Perth acts.

Their latest track stays true to their style of Electro Pop with a touch of 90’s, delivering an eclectic disco bombshell that reminds us that sexuality is not a democracy, and you shouldn’t have to vote on love. “It was a very emotional, heartbreaking and strengthening time, where the future of people under the rainbow had to be decided upon by others”. “The song was written at a very special time in my life, where I was finally beginning to live as my authentic self. So we wrote it for loved ones, and for any person that’s ever felt lost, alone or persecuted”. “Cause in the end we both realised that people will think what they want, and sadly that may never change... but what we can do is keep fighting, and living for truth... because you shouldn’t weather, we (society) should know better”
